Royal Ascot: Windsor Castle Stakes

The Windsor Castle Stakes, a Listed race over 5 furlongs, is staged on the final day of the Royal meeting. It was first run at the Royal meeting in 1880, although prior to that a similarly named race was contested at Egham, and during the Second World War Windsor hosted a race called the 'Windsor Castle Stakes'. Furthermore, The Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot over the New Mile was first run in 1839 and is included in this section.
Early history:- The inaugural running of the Windsor Castle Stakes over 5 furlongs and 136 yards was on Friday 11th June 1880 when Mr W G Craven's Capuchin (6/4 fav) defeated Sea Foam (100/30) and Agnes Ethel (6/1) by 4 lengths and a distance.

The inaugural running of the Windsor Castle Stakes for 3-year-olds over the New Mile was on Thursday 30th May 1839 when won by a black colt by Sir Hercules out of Gulnare, winning 600 sovereigns from 6 subscriptions (equivalent to £63,000 in 2020). The Corsair was first passed the post but was disqualified for not carrying 5lb extra as a result of winning a 2000 guineas stake. Over round 103%
